June 2, 2022 Camden County Commission meeting at 1:00 p.m.

I attended the June 2, 2022 Camden County Commission meeting at 1:00 p.m.

All commissioners were present.

I was the only person in the audience who did not work for Camden County.

It was a little annoying because I didn’t notice this was a 1:00 p.m. meeting and I showed up at 10:00 a.m. I drove back home, took a nap, and came back at the correct time. Just another day in the life of a gadfly.

Commissioner Hasty asked if there was anyone who wanted to speak publicly about the agenda items. I shook my head and we got started on the agenda.

The first agenda item was the Collectors Bid Acceptance. The Collector recommended accepting the bid from The Reporter. I wrote about these bids in the May 3, 2022 meeting post. The Reporter bid $325 and the Lake-Sun bid $350 for the 2022 Tax Sale Publication. The Collector picked The Reporter’s bid because it was cheaper.

The Commission approved this unanimously.

The second agenda item was for Stoutland Broadband. It sounded like this was to pay for broadband service to the Stoutland schools. The Commission didn’t have any paperwork for this, but Commissioner Hasty said it had been discussed at the Council of Local Governments.

The Commission voted unanimously to table this item.

The Auditor mentioned that the school district would probably be able to qualify for a grant for fiber broadband service so I assume we’ll hear more about this in the future.

Commissioner Gohagan brought up old business concerning new first responder trucks for the Mid County Fire Protection District. This was tabled at the May 17, 2022 meeting, and, at that meeting, Commissioner Hasty had expressed his feelings that the fire district could probably afford their own new trucks.

It seems that Commissioners Gohagan and Williams have done some investigating, and Mid County Fire is experiencing a reduction in their tax levy. Their first responder trucks are all from 1996 or older, and they do seem to need three new vehicles.

Commissioner Gohagan asked the Auditor how much ARPA money the fire district had requested for the trucks. Jimmy responded that it was either $185,000 or $165,000.

I told Jimmy it was $165,000. (Sheesh! Shut up, know-it-all!)

Jimmy ignored me.

The Commission decided to schedule the Mid County Fire Protection Fire District ARPA Request for next Tuesday’s meeting.

And that was that.
