I attended the May 21, 2024, Camden County Commission meeting at 10:00 a.m.
Commissioners Gohagan and Skelton were present.
The first agenda item was Final public hearing for speed limit reduction on Southern Cherokee Drive and West Lake Park.
Four residents were present from Southern Cherokee Drive and they all wanted the speed limit to remain at 35 MPH.
Six residents were present for West Lake Park and they all wanted the speed limit reduced. One of the residents also brought a petition with 26 signatures from neighbors who wanted a reduction in the speed limit. One resident also asked if the county could put a speed radar trailer sign on the street to inform drivers of their speed.
The Commission voted unanimously to keep the speed limit for Southern Cherokee Drive the same.
The Commission voted unanimously to reduce the speed limit on West Lake Park to 20 MPH.
The second agenda item was Bid opening – 240521 Juvenile Justice Center – Water Mitigation.
There was one bid from Kenny Carroll Excavating for $37,500.
Presiding Commissioner Skelton explained that the county had contacted multiple vendors to seek out other bids.
Commissioner Gohagan said that there is a slope from the road that gathers water next to the building like a fish bowl. This bid will use a 4” perforated pipe to drain the standing water away from the building.
The Commission voted unanimously to accept the only bid.
The third agenda item was Tips resolution – Stiles Roofing.
County Attorney Green explained that by joining the TIPS program, the county can use vendors that are part of the TIPS purchasing system. Stiles Roofing is a member of the TIPS program. Camden County is interested in using Stiles to repair the roof on the Juvenile Justice Center.
The Commission voted to table the adoption of the TIPS program until the May 28 meeting.
(TIPS stands for The Interlocal Purchasing System. It’s a purchasing cooperative for governmental bodies that allows them to procure services and bidding contracts through an organized bidding system that gives access to vendors who have already met the requirements to be part of the TIPS vendor pool. TIPS also provides pricing that is only available to the much larger TIPS buyers group and is most likely cheaper than the county could find by bidding on its own.)
The final agenda item was Rush Truck Centers.
Rush Truck Centers gave a presentation on their sales, leasing, and maintenance of Peterbilt and International trucks. To make a long story short, they are a large dealership network for trucks that could be used by the Road and Bridge Department.
And that was that.
