The Gadfly attended the July 11, 2022 Camden County Commission meeting at 10:00 a.m.

Commissioners Hasty and Williams were present.

This meeting was on a Monday which is unusual.

The Commission meets every three months on a Monday to handle road petitions. Road petitions are sought when a property owner petitions Camden County to stop maintaining a road on their property. The owner is basically asking the county to forget about the road so they can build on it, fence it off, or whatever else they have planned. Road petitions are simple when the land owner has the road solely on his or her property. They require the signatures of neighbors if the road is adjacent to the property of others or offers access to other properties.

The first road petition was for Swift Hollow Road. The property owners own the property on both sides of the road. This petition was quickly approved by the Commission.

The second road petition was for a road in the Brown Bend subdivision. The property owner wanted to vacate the road that ended on his property so he could build a house there. Commissioner Hasty, a former surveyor, reviewed the petition and said it needed a better legal description. The Commission recommended he get a new survey of the property to make sure the legal description is clear and accurate. The money spent on a new survey would save the property owner from a lot of issues in the future.

Commissioner Hasty told him that Missouri statutes require that a surveyor prepare the legal description for a property. The property owner asked the commissioners if they could recommend a surveyor? The commissioners said they could not recommend one, but there are many surveyors who could do it for him.

The good news is that the property owner doesn’t have to wait three months for the next road petition meeting. He can just get a new survey and a better legal description and ask that his revised petition be added to the agenda for a regular Commission meeting.

The final road petition was from a couple who were at the previous road petition meeting. They had prepared petitions for several roads which were approved, but their final petition required a neighbor’s signature. They had the signature for this meeting and their petition for 270 W. Climax Springs Park was approved.

The final agenda item was to appoint John Olivarri to the Library Board.

The Commission approved this appointment unanimously.

It’s funny how easy it is to handle road access issues when you have public meetings about them, isn’t it?

And that was that.

  1. Thanks so much for your objective concise review of our County Commission meetings. Rather than us having to listen to the propagandized versions from those involved & our local “Press”.
